It does seem to vary. Some people love the taste and describe it as fruity and a bit custardy, other people think it’s gross but it’s difficult to know if they don’t like the taste or are just hung up on the smell!
I tried durian once in a place that served fruit dishes, including durian pizza. I asked for small portion of the fruit, it smelled like something in decay 🤢 and it had a overwhelming sweet taste. I couldn't eat more than one bite.

I'm from Indonesia, which is the origin country of durian, and I love the smell so much! Let alone the taste of it.
I do think it’s a geographical origin thing. Much like there will be things from the west smell really unusual to people from the east.
