One addition: for those who like Cuban coffee, the moka is an ideal mechanism. Take the first couple of ounces, mix in enough sugar to make a paste, whip until frothy, then add it back in and make sure you have an insulin shot handy. This makes even the worst coffee taste good and will provide sufficient caffeine for all but the most jaded addicts. I got through more than one night shift thanks to this stuff.
Pre heating the water cuts your dwell time in the pot, but not overall. The moka pot makes such a smooth cup of coffee, I don't see the need to remove the pot once the coffee begins to blonde, but to each his own. I like to make a proper cafe latte with mine: one to one coffee and milk/half-and-half, but if you want it hot you need to warm the milk as well. Nothing else I've tried makes a cup as good or as strong.
