10 unusual ice cream flavours, for when chocolate just isn't enough
Bored of vanilla, sick of strawberry, need something other than a chocolate fix? How about wasabi, rosemary and Gorgonzola?
We can all agree that ice cream is one of the best foods in the world. It doesn't matter whether it's hot or cold outside, whether it's breakfast, lunch or dinner time... ice cream is never a bad choice.
Sometimes you might fancy a change from the norm, something a little different to your usual vanilla, chocolate or strawberry. Well, how about some of these flavours? Here are 10 of the most unusual ice creams that exist...
1) Wasabi ice cream
It was created in an ice cream shop in New York – an exotic ice cream characterized by the spicy taste of one of the most loved Japanese ingredients. You might need an extra ice cream to cool your mouth down after eating though.
2) Beer ice cream
You won't find this much in Italy, but in countries like Germany, it is said everyone loves a bit of beer ice cream. They do drink more of the stuff than we do, so it makes sense.
3) Squid ink and squid ice cream
Directly from Japan, it is a completely black ice cream conquering all of Asia. Will it also be successful in Europe? We're not sure whether everyone will be able to get their heads around this one, although James May has tried – and enjoyed it – on his show, 'Our Man in Japan'.
4) Parmigiano Reggiano ice cream
In Italy, a few fine dining restaurants have started offering Parmigiano Reggiano ice cream to pair with certain dishes. It's a little sweet and a little salty – definitely one of those ice creams to try at least once in your life.
5) Vanilla ice cream with maple syrup and crispy bacon
Americans have been having their pancakes with maple syrup and crispy bacon for ages, so why not turn that classic breakfast into ice cream? Salty? Sweet? Creamy? Hell yeh.
6) Pear and gorgonzola ice cream
This unusual flavour won a competition in France and was immediately a huge success. There are now loads of recipes on the internet for poached pears with Gorgonzola ice cream, with some sites even declaring it a festive staple.
7) Pizza flavoured ice cream
Pizza is one of the most loved dishes in the world, so why not make it into ice cream? The ice cream is composed of a creamy base prepared with Fior di Latte (milk), to which San Marzano tomato jam and crumbled pizza have been added. Tempting?
8) Ham ice cream
Launched in the United States as a pork-flavoured ice cream, in Italy it has been re-proposed in more recent years to be made with Piadina Romagnola.
9) Rosemary ice cream
Combined with roast meat or at the end of a meal topped with crunchy hazelnut, rosemary ice cream is finding many fans. It's another one that's cropped up in Italy's fine dining establishments.
10) Prosecco ice cream
You can get both Prosecco flavoured ice cream and a popsicle version. From the list, it's definitely one of the most 'normal' and 'easy' flavours to enjoy.
So, which of these crazy flavours would you try?

Beer ice cream an institution in Germany? Personally, I never heard of it so far but apparently my compatriots are even more weird than I thought
Well, the news said so, but the reporter may have "inflated" the truth! ahahahahah
Oh please take my money. I just want maple syrup and bacon ice cream right now. 😜
Really?!
Yup. I would so eat that.
I'm annoyed I didn't think of prosecco ice cream first, but the rest can get in the bin.
not even the beer one?
Ah yes, I'll take the beer one
Onion ice cream... made with red onion of Acquaviva delle Fonti... very big and sweet ... strange but good 😋
Mhh it seems interesting!
I think I've had the maple and bacon, and it was really good. The pear and gorgonzola also looks delicious, but I'm disappointed that you left out garlic flavored ice cream. I've only ever seen it at the Gilroy, CA Garlic Festival, but I'm told it's...better than it sounds. I'll happily take everyone else's word for it.
OMG garlic ice cream?! Really?
