5 ways to make sure your kitchen is ready for coronavirus

As fears of a coronavirus outbreak loom over the US, people are panic-buying and stockpiling food and other necessities, with retailers dealing with empty shelves in recent days.

But there are a few steps you can take to make sure you’re ready if you need to stay home. It’s about getting prepared, not panicking. Here are five ways you can make sure your kitchen is ready...
1. Buy food that will last you for two weeks
The official advice on how to prepare for coronavirus here in the US is changing rapidly but it may be that Americans are asked to stay at home and avoid large groups of people. If that’s the case, you should look at preparing a two-week supply of food for your family.
2. Grab those all-important pantry staples
It’s a good idea to have a well-stocked pantry of non-perishable items. Think pasta, grains, seeds, canned beans, coconut milk, canned tomatoes, nuts, dried fruit, bouillon cubes, coffee, tea, flour, sugar, chocolate, olive oil, cereal and peanut butter.
Vegetables like potatoes, onions and other root vegetables can also be kept in a cool, dark place like the pantry.
3. Stock the freezer
The freezer is obviously a great place to store food that will keep you going for a while. There’s the obvious: meat and vegetables. But it’s possible to freeze more things than you might imagine, for example butter, berries bananas, bread, herbs and plenty more. You can also do some batch cooking - think soups, stews and casseroles - then freeze them for eating later.
4. Taste still matters
Just because you’re buying things in bulk for an emergency doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice on taste. Don’t forget flavor essentials like garlic, olive oil, salt, pepper and spices. You can also buy condiments that keep for ages in the fridge to spice things up, for example miso, kimchi, pickles, mustard, ketchup, hot sauce and jam.
5. Don't forget breakfast and snacks
When we think of stockpiling food, we’re so busy thinking of what to batch cook that it’s easy to neglect things like tasty snacks and breakfast. Have granola, oats and cereal on hand. You should also get chocolate and candy to keep everyone happy. Granola bars and popcorn are good healthy alternatives since you might be inside for a while.
