From an ignorant meatatarians perspective such as myself, I allowed myself to become uneducated about what other foods you can actually eat which contain high amounts of protein. When I was visiting my godfather in New Zealand earlier this year, he introduced me to this alien product called 'Tofu' which turned out to be rather nice. Because of this, I decided to do a bit of research and come up with seven foods which are high in protein yet contain zero meat.
This might be an obvious one but it is still very much worth mentioning. As Jamie Oliver once said, 'eggs are the cheapest form of high protein you can buy'. This is true. Not only are proper organic chicken eggs cheaper than chicken, they also come from the same animal which we enjoy at Nandos.
Love it or hate it, cottage cheese is a great source of protein. If you are brave enough to eat this in a bowl with some nuts and raisins then you are winning. Not only is it high in protein, but it is also low in calories and fats meaning it's great to add to your meals or have as a snack.
Ahhhh another Los Angeles special. I think it has grown past that stage now but it really is a great food to include in your diet which has plenty of protein. This is classed as a 'superfood' and is very high in vitamins, minerals, fibres and antioxidants. It works very well in a salad with some tomato, avocado and a bunch of other vegetables.
This has to be one of my favourites here and I very rarely go a day without peanuts. I know there will be some people who are allergic to peanuts so would advise to skip this one. You can eat peanuts as they are or even better, in the form of peanut butter. My favourite ways of eating peanut butter is either with banana, with porridge or on toast. It tastes good in a protein shake too. Just please don't buy 'peanut butter flavoured' protein powder. It is vile.
While Greek yoghurt may have more calories than you think, it is great for some cheeky extra protein in your day. If you can find one with no added sugar then that is much better. It tends to be a very thick yoghurt but is great with some berries and a drizzle of honey on top.
Here it is, the saviour that is tofu. I had always been sceptical about eating tofu because I thought 'what's the point?'. But, it's not until you try it that you realise it really isn't that bad. My first tofu meal was a sort of Japanese fish soup with vegetable fritters and tofu. It was a delicious meal. It doesn't taste of anything by itself which means you can make it taste like whatever you want.
I have just recovered from a mild almond addiction. I was obsessed with these little things for months. These are great in moderation just like all the other items on this list. I would advise against salted ones as they can outweigh the good in the nut. Almonds are packed full of NUTrients and also some protein. They're great to consume as a milk or my favourite, roasted almonds.
So, there you have it. Here are seven of the best non-meat protein boosters. Of course, there are lots more you can discover and research for yourself but these are the ones I would personally recommend. I would love to hear what you eat to make up for your daily protein allowance that isn't meat based. While I still very much love chicken, I would still dive right into one of these ingredients.
