7 perfect cocktails for Halloween
Everything you need to make the bar as spooky as the guests.
It's not just for kids, you know. Halloween is one of those times of year where we are given free rein to be kids again. If you cant take that opportunity and run with it, when can you?
That is, to a certain extent. Yes, we will dress in silly costumes, eat candy until we feel sick and try to frighten the life out our loved ones. But, to facilitate the madness, as adults we can fuel it with booze!
Here are our top choices of spooky tipples to get you in the mood for some trick or treating!
Zombie brain haemorrhage shooter
If that name doesn't scream Halloween, I don't know what does!
You'll need: Peach Schnapps, Irish Creme, melon liqueur, and grenadine
1. 2/3 fill your shot glass with peach schnapps
2. Half fill the remainder with melon liqueur
3. Carefully fill to just below the brim with the Irish creme so that it sits on top
4. Finish with a drizzle of grenadine
No party would be complete without a punch bowl. Like the printer in an office, it's where the gossip happens, and here's one that fits right in with the theme. For full effect, brew it in a black punch bowl or a caldron with dry ice underneath.
You'll need: Peach Schnapps, Coconut Rum, Spiced Rum, Melon Liqueur, Blue Curaçao, and orange juice
Add to the bowl:
1. 3 parts spiced rum
2. 3 parts melon liqueur
3. 2 parts blue curaçao
4. 2 parts coconut rum
5. 2 parts peach schnapps
6. 6 parts orange juice
For an extra bit of flare, rim the bowl with green or blue sherbet and finish with dry ice (around the bowl, not in it).
Shaky Pete's Ginger Brew
This looks perfect for Halloween with its frothy orange head, but it's tall and refreshing enough to be drunk year round, so it'll quickly become your go to cocktail.
You'll need: 35ml Mr. Kamm's gin, 50ml ginger syrup, 50ml lemon juice, and 100ml London Pride ale
1. Put the gin, lemon juice and ginger syrup in a cocktail shaker with ice.
2. Shake it - this needs flare, purely for effect!
3. Strain into your glass.
4. Top up with the ale.
Corpse Reviver No. Blue
This drink was originally developed as a hangover cure for poor corpse-like souls who had overdone it the night before - we've all been there. With a name like Corpse Reviver, it's perfect for your Halloween cocktail menu. Who doesn't love a blue drink?
You'll need: 20ml Mr. Kamm's gin, 20ml Blue Curaçao, 20ml Lillet Blanc, 40ml lemon juice, and 3 drops of absinthe
1. Rinse your chosen glass with the absinthe
2. Add the gin, curaçao, Lillet Blanc and lemon juice to a cocktail shaker with ice.
3. Shake it - put on a show!
4. Strain into your glass and garnish with lemon peel, or something more gory if you prefer.
Poison Apple Martini
Pure black drinks are cool, aren't they? Not dark like Coke, but really black. There's something about them that hints at magic potions... Halloween definitely deserves its own black cocktail.
You'll need: 1/2 cup apple cider, a dash of pomegranate juice, a dash of lemon juice, 20ml vodka, and activated charcoal or black food colouring (activated charcoal interacts with and can change the effect of some medications - just check first!)
1. Add the cider, pomegranate juice, lemon juice vodka and your choice of colouring agent to a cocktail shaker with ice.
2. Shake it, shake it, shake it!
3. Strain into your chosen glass.
4. You might consider rimming the glass with something fancy, or garnishing with some red apple peel.
Jazz Apple Hot Toddy – created by Two Thirsty Gardeners
If you're looking for something a little more chilled out, something you can get cosy with while watching a spooky movie this Halloween, we have you covered. Breathe deeply while sipping and enjoy the spicy aromas of this warm and comforting appley booze.
You'll need: 1 Jazz Apple, 1 ⅓ cup water, 2 cloves, ½ cinnamon stick, 1 tsp lemon juice, ½ thumb-sized chunk of ginger, 60ml brandy or dark rum, and 2 tsp honey
1. Cut off a slice from your Jazz Apple and set it aside for later.
2. Roughly dice the rest of the apple, including the core.
3. Fill your chosen drinking mug with water and pour it into a pan. Then pour in another third of a mug of water (to allow for evaporation).
4. To this add the diced apple, cloves, cinnamon and lemon juice. Peel and finely slice or grate the ginger and add this as well.
5. Bring the liquid to the boil then turn the heat down and gently simmer for 15 minutes. As the pieces of apple soften you can press them against the side of the pan to squeeze out maximum juice.
6. Pour in the brandy or rum and give it a good stir, then strain the liquid into your mug.
7. Dice the slices of apple you set aside into raisin-sized pieces and sprinkle on top.

And finally something non-alcoholic, so everyone can get involved.
You'll need: Juice of 2 Jazz Apples, slices of Jazz Apples, orange slices, cloves, star anise, cinnamon, and vanilla
1. Throw everything into a saucepan and let it simmer on a low heat for 10 minutes.
2. Pour into a wine glass. You can strain it if you like, but it's pretty as it is.
3. Garnish with some Jazz apple slices or peel.
Some finishing touches...
Glowing ice cubes
These are so simple, there is really little excuse not to try it. Add a dash of tonic water to your ice cubes and when near a black light, they will glow a really cool blue!
This makes everything look super spooky and atmospheric, but remember to be careful with it. It absolutely should not be drunk! There are food grade alternatives that will sink to the bottom of drinks and stay there but, safety first. It's just as effective having it around the drinks or in one or two for Instagram purposes!
Heap this into your drinks to turn them completely black without spoiling the taste. It's magic. It does make some medications less effective though, so check this out beforehand and substitute for black food dye if you need to.
