Aldi, the German discount supermarket chain, has released a range of vegan products to capitalise on this year’s Veganuary craze. This January around 3.5 million people worldwide are avoiding meat, fish, eggs and dairy, and almost every supermarket is adapting to cater for their new dietary needs.

Subsequently, Aldi have released a new selection of ready meals, meat substitutes and snack items. Of note is their ‘Plant Menu Vegan Sausage Roll’, a clear nod to Greggs, who showed the world that veganism was ready to go mainstream with their incredibly popular vegan sausage roll last year. In the spirit of one-upmanship, they’ve introduced both a regular sausage roll and a BBQ jackfruit flavour one, both of which cost 99p.

The most curious new option is the fishless canned tuna, which can be bought for £1.19 a can. Made of textured soya protein, this has been flavoured with vegan fish flavour and seaweed, and is available in mayonnaise or water.

The supermarket have come up with a range of ready meals, both frozen and chilled, which start at £1.99. Everything on offer is extremely affordable, and will certainly make it easier for anyone and everyone to cut down on their meat intake for the good of the planet. Aldi have stated that their range will only be available until March, but perhaps the range’s popularity will inspire them to carry on beyond that date.

    • it's a damn impressive shop if you ask me Hayley. Rarely do I want to buy ski-gear, gardening gloves and vegetables all at the same time but it's great to know such a place exists should I find the need to do so.
