An aircraft carrier has been transformed into a floating restaurant in Harlem
Talk about drinks with a view
There's a new hot spot for outdoor dining in Harlem, New York and it takes the idea of redevelopment to a whole new level. The name of the restaurant / bar is Baylander Steel Beach and it is a decommissioned aircraft carrier that's been converted into a restaurant. Awesome.
The bar is actually named after the aircraft carrier on which it's built, a former US Navy ship called Baylander IX-514, and it's located at the West Harlem Piers at 125th Street. There's outdoor as well as indoor dining space and the view is, dare I say, spectacular.
The Baylander was built in 1968 to serve the US Navy in the Vietnam War and the US Army in Guam, and it was decommissioned in 2011 and sold a company called Al Trenk, which also operates the 30th street NYC heliport. After a $500,000 investment, the former ship was first utilized as a museum for educational tours until Michael Trenk, member of the Trenk Family Foundation and 'Prohibition', a Jazz bar located in the Upper West Side, decided to turn this into a dining and drinking establishment.
Baylander Steel Beach opened on the Fourth of July holiday and it features a seafood-focused menu with lobster rolls ($24), fried clam strips ($10) and beer-battered fish-and-chip tacos ($12), and of course Aperol Spritz. Baylander is open Wednesday through Sunday from 3-10 PM.
