Animal shelter uses pizza boxes to help find dogs a home
Dogs and pizza. The greatest double act of all time?
They say that the way to a person’s heart is through their stomach – and an animal shelter in the US is doing just that, in a bid to spread the word about dogs in need of a home. The medium of choice? Pizza.
Yep, New York’s Niagara SPCA has teamed up with the Just Pizza & Wing Co. franchise to distribute flyers advertising a selection of their longest-serving furry friends. But how do the flyers get to the punters? Why, in their pizza boxes, of course!
A doughy delight, plus a cute pooch’s doggy details. Can it get any better than this?
Well… actually, it can. Anyone who chooses to adopt one of the lucky dogs also receives a $50 (£39) voucher to spend on further pizzas. What a wonderful world!
The shelter came up with the genius idea after Mary Alloy, the big-hearted owner of the pizza shop, took in one of their cats – Smokey, who had been living at the shelter for a very long time.
Niagara SPCA’s Kimberly LaRussa told Metro.co.uk, “We are always looking for fun and unique ways to promote our shelter animals.
“Right now we have a lot of shelter dogs who have been with us for a longer period of time, mainly because they have to be the only dog in the home.”
Since the initiative began, two dogs have found new pizza-loving owners: Larry, a six-month old pit retriever mix, and Joel, a seven-month-old pit mix.
So, that clinches it. Love at first slice is indeed a real thing.
