As a general rule, I stay away from donuts. I work in law enforcement, and there is that annoying stereotype that cops eat donuts all the time. So I abstain rather than get caught, in uniform, with a donut in hand!
But, we stopped at a place recently to grab some donuts to bring with us to my wife's relative's house because their kids love them. Now I love 'em too! In fact, I've had donuts from this place two weekends in a row!
Sooooooooo bad but soooooooo good!
The donut shop I'm talking about is a local joint called Marietta Donuts, in Marietta, GA. It's an unassuming hole-in-the-wall shop that shares a building with a gas station on a busy, multi-lane road. Really, I wouldn't even have know it was there if I hadn't stopped at the location to fuel up my wife's car on a few occasions. I certainly would never had stopped for donuts if my wife hadn't heard her relative's kids love them! But stop we did, and hooked I've become!
I can't wait to try the jalapeno kalache!
I started out with a single donut, on the first trip. A maple-glazed bacon donut was my first taste of Marietta Donuts selection, and it was absolutely perfect. I was surprised by one thing right off the bat; not only did the maple glaze melt in my mouth, but the actual donut itself seemed to melt in my mouth as well! The donut has a really nice hint of flavor from the fryer that gives it a little more depth than just a plain cakey donut or pastry. And then, on top of the beautiful sweetness from the donut, it had umami from the bacon. Absolute heaven!!!
I do think I deserve a donut!!!
We went back this past weekend, and I ordered a half-dozen donuts just for myself. I ordered three maple-glazed bacon donuts and three of one of my favorite breakfast treats that I don't ever allow myself to have; custard filed eclairs! It was neat, because when you order a filled donut, they don't fill them until you order them. It was very fresh tasting, and frankly very addictive. While I found the custard filled eclairs to be very good, the maple-glazed bacon donuts are definitely where it's at! I bought my six donuts Saturday afternoon and by Sunday morning, my fat ass had eaten all six!
I can't be caught eating these!
And the bonus is the donut holes. My wife loves sweets, but tends to eat small portions and tries to eat healthy (except for her chocolate addiction). Well, the two boxes of donuts we've grabbed in the two weekends have included a handful of complimentary donut holes. My wife makes those disappear pretty quickly!
The maple-glazed bacon donuts are where it's at!
