Birthday dinner for my wife – childhood whitefish salad memories
Doing birthday celebrations deli style!
My wife wanted some good food for her birthday yesterday. Specific, good food. And I was on board because it was pretty damn good! Back in the day, my wife's grandfather had a deli down in Florida, and she has fond memories of the food he sold out of it. One of the items, one of her favorites, was whitefish salad. She would eat it spread on a bagel back then. Well, my wife introduced me to the whitefish salad about ten years ago, and I have to say, I like it!
For her birthday dinner, I bought her some fresh bagels from her favorite local deli, whitefish salad, cream cheese, and her favorite half-sour pickles. We had Jewish deli food for dinner!
Not a bad spread for a birthday dinner!
I have grown fond of this meal, and pretty much prepare my bagel like my wife prepares hers. Cream cheese goes down first, followed by whitefish salad, small pieces of sliced onion, and then tomato on top. It's very good! You get a little crunch from the toasted bagel, but they're nice and soft through the middle. The whitefish salad has a nice strong flavor to it. It's a saltiness and smokiness that is somewhere between mild and strong. The cream cheese goes well with the whitefish as it tempers it a touch. The onion ads a nice little bite to the flavor, and the fresh sliced tomato rounds out everything with its juiciness and a hint of tanginess.
I love the pasta salad from this little local deli, so I got some of that for myself! It's mayonnaise based and packs a lot of good flavor with diced onion and peppers. It's tangy! I love it! And I had Claussen dill pickles with my dinner, as I can't quite get behind the half-sour pickles. I enjoy the flavor and snap from the Claussen pickles.
I love this pasta salad!
