Can you still get supermarket deliveries?
Supermarket delivery services are always great, and they might even be a life saver for many at the moment
The supermarkets are a riot at the moment. I went at 7am this morning to find bare shelves and a line of trolleys long enough to stretch throughout the entire shop. These places are not safe for people who are in a high risk group. Many have turned, naturally to online delivery, but things aren't entirely simple even still. Many might be wondering how they would manage the interaction without coming into contact with the driver.
Well, the good news is, that if you are social distancing because of an underlying health condition or if you have been advised to self isolate, you won’t want to have to speak to the driver. Like takeaway delivery companies, supermarkets are allowing contactless deliveries during the outbreak. The British Retail Consortium, a group in which most UK supermarkets are in, have issued some advice on this matter.
Andrew Opie, Director of Food & Sustainability at the British Retail Consortium, said: ‘Most BRC members are more than happy for the majority of online deliveries to be delivered on doorsteps when customers have suggested that they are self-isolating.'
‘Despite difficult times, retailers strive to provide the best service for their customers, both online and in-store and are working as hard as they can to ensure consumers have access to whatever products they want.’ Like with takeaway, you just need to let the supermarket know when you order that you need the items to be left at the door, and this is done by contacting customer services.
One thing to note though; you can't order alcohol if you've chosen contactless. That's because the driver needs to check your ID, and it's just not practical for you to show him it via a ground floor window.
But with this issue addressed, another remains outstanding. The demand for supermarket goods is so ludicrously high at the moment that delivery slots are hotly contested, and a lot of items are out of stock.
On this matter, Andrew Opie commented: ‘Retailers have seen an uptick in online deliveries and are taking all necessary steps to meet this rise in demand so that all consumers continue to have access to the products they need.’
Getting a delivery slot is a long-winded process, requiring you to check up repeatedly on a range of supermarket websites and snag any available slot that might come through a cancellation. Persistence and patience will be the order of the day for the foreseeable future, unfortunately.
