Cebularze z serem(pancakes with cheese and onion)recipe
Are you fan of onion? Wonderful, so am I! Try this recipe for delicious, fluffy and amazing cebularze with cheese.
A short history of cebularze: cebularze (cebularz is the singular form) come from Jewish cuisine and are made with diced onion and poppy seeds. In Poland, cebularze are characteristic of Lublin cuisine. They were firstly sold in Lublin Old Town before World War II, and were well known.
I hadn't got any poppy seeds, so I decided to prepare cebularze with diced onion and cheese. I usually do things my way, so don't be suprised ,it's a good way to experiment 🤷♂
Recipe for 6 medium cebularze with cheese
Ingredients
- flour (500g)
- warm milk (250ml)
- salt (x1 tablespoon)
- sugar (x 2 tablespoons)
- egg (x1)
- yeast( 50g)
- cheese (125g or more if you like)
- ADDITIONALLY – an egg, to brush edges before baking
Instructions
- Add the yeast, 2 tablespoons of flour, 1 teaspoon of sugar, 1 teaspoon of salt and warm milk to a bowl. Mix and set aside for 10 minutes. After this time, add the rest of flour, salt, sugar and an egg. Knead the dough (it must have a smooth consistency as usually). Put the bowl of dough in a warm place for 30 minutes to an hour.
- Let the dough double in size. Meanwhile, chop the onion and grate the cheese. Fry onion until gold colour (if you want to, you can sprinkle the diced onion with salt and sugar – it's not obligatory, though!). Leave the onion to cool.
- After 30 minutes to an hour, knead the dough one more time for 2 minutes on a table sprinkled with flour. Create a long roll and divide into 6 pieces.
- Roll out each piece to make little cakes, and add the onion and cheese.
- Brush the edges with an egg and bake for 20 minutes at 180*C.
