Challenge: Write a food law

FoodTribe has ruled pineapple on pizza is okay, so that's out.

When we were young and sullen, we learned that not everyone likes what we like. We were then taught that is okay, and that a world full of people who liked the same thing would be boring.

However, I can’t help but think that a world full of John Colemans would mean that I’d never dish some fried rice onto my plate and find it’s got raisins in it. Raisins belong in cereals and desserts. They don’t belong in curries, they don’t belong in rice, and no matter what the Brazilians insist, they certainly have no place on hot dogs. Their intense sweetness does not complement other flavours; it just makes you panic that perhaps the beans went into the vanilla pudding.

So as willing as I am to extend gracious live and let livism to my fellow food lovers, raisins in savoury dishes should be unlawful. Punishable by blue cheese.

  • Thou shalt not interfere with The Cook. Wait for the result, taste, pass judgement but don't disturb The Creative Process.

  • This is possibly the most John Coleman post ever. Love it.

Food law; needless fancifying of dishes on menus. Call it sausage and mash if it’s sausage and mash. Not pork javelins on a bed of structurally damaged starch, drizzled with a meaty jus. Unless I’m in a foreign country I don’t want to have to translate a menu into something I can understand before ordering.

    • Part of me agrees, but part of me also get excited when I see things I can't understand on a menu. Mash and mush (y peas) puts me off right away.

Now what penalty for infraction are you proposing?

    • On the spot penalty. Restaurant owners must chug a pint of warm flat cola. And it’s off brand stuff too. And then stand on a chair in the dining room and apologise to the customers.

  • Cookies with raisins.

The amount of money I've WASTED thinking I was buying chocolate chip cookies - only to end up with the bitter disappointment of eating damn RAISINS.

    • Well, I sympathise with mistaking raisin biscuits for choc chip, because sometimes my mum would go months of choc chip biscuits and one day have a more healthy idea without telling anyone.

However. When I'm aware, and not expecting...

  • I would ban the eating of insects. There is no need in it.
