Tequila brand Código 1530 (a nod to the year of the foundation of the municipality of Amatitán, Jalisco, Mexico) has just released a rare and astonishingly expensive bottle of 13-year-aged (in Cognac cask) añejo tequila, priced at $3,300 a bottle. Ouch.
It's made using fully ripe agave and rock-filtered water with no added sugars, colours or flavourings. According to Codigo, the new tequila has notes of cinnamon, cocoa powder and vanilla, with a spicy and 'peachy' aftertaste.
Part of the reason why it's so expensive is that only 350 bottles have been produced but Codigo's co-founder Federico Vaughan is adamant the 13-year Añejo tequila "is in its own category."
"We are taking our already beautifully aged Extra Añejo, and finishing it in French Cognac casks for another 6 months, which gives it a truly unique and distinguished taste," added Vaughan.
