Cook Local

What if all of your groceries were locally sourced?

Since the pandemic started, I found it less and less fun to go to the grocery store. People have a difficulty understanding what 2 meters appart means and since the mandatory mask rule (in Canada) we see that it is equally difficult for some people to understand that wearing your mask properly, or at all, could help reduce the spread. Let's not get into a mask debate... Let's get to the food. All that to say, I was looking for a way to reduce my visits to the grocery store so I became a "Lufavore". That's what the Montreal based Lufa Farms calls its clients.

Lufa Farms started around than 10 years ago in Montreal, Canada. Their mission: Deliver groceries that have been locally grown and sourced to Montrealers. Now when we say locally, not everything is grown in the city, but all of it comes from the province of Quebec, and most of it comes from a few kilometers around the island of Montreal.

When you subscribe to Lufa, you order your groceries from their website once a week. You choose what day you want it for and you put a minimum of 25$ of food in your basket. The website updates each week, and even each day, with what products are available. This depends on the season, and the prices will vary depending on how much they have of a certain thing any given week. A lot of the vegetables are grown on rooftop greenhouses in the city. Lufa actually built this year the largest rooftop greenhouse in the world!

Once you filled your basket, you can choose to pick it up at one of their pick up points near you or you can have it delivered to your house for 5$. Deliveries are done in electric cars.

The products offered vary from all fruits and vegetables to milk, bread, meat, vegan options and sweets. They also have ready meals and meal kits with easy recipes if you are not a cook.

The fruits and veggies are definitely the start of the show. And since this is no normal grocery store, you can get funny looking ones for a bit less money.

Not only is it nice to know that everything you eat is locally sourced but it also tastes great! I think this concept should be exported to each big city.
