Daughter opens her dad's £2,000 bottle of Petrus wine – makes sangria

Why not also take his Ferrari and enter it into a demolition derby while she's it?!!

People who know wine will know Petrus. This top-shelf wine is synonymous with the most superior bottles available, anywhere. At prices ranging from £1000 to £6000 ($1386 to $8318), it had better be! Can you imagine the horror if you had hoarded one of these coveted bottles, only to find out it was used to make sangria? I'm weak in the knees thinking about it, but let's see how Pete Jones handled this situation...

According to the Daily Mail, Pete kept his bottle of Petrus sitting around for nearly two decades. He purchased it, on accident, Christmas Eve of 2004 after telling the shop to get him 'a bottle from the top shelf'. It then waited for the right time; the right occasion for seventeen years. It was one of around 30,000 produced each year - a large number, but a paltry quantity in the wine world.

Pete showed off the bottle to a friend and then haphazardly left it out of the cellar. It sat, unhidden when his daughter Lara, 19, decided to have friends over for a party. Pete, being a rad dad, left for most of the evening to let the girls be girls. He woke the next morning to see the treasured bottle gone?!

In an exchange with Lara, he found out the girls opened it and used it to make sangria! "When he quizzed Lara in a text, she replied: 'I hope it wasn't expensive… I think my friends drank it.' He informed her it was a '€2,500 bottle'. Rather than hitting the roof, he blamed himself for leaving the bottle in plain view with a bunch of teenagers in the house."

Pete added, "'I am just gutted that after saving it for 17 years, I didn't even get to taste it, and the tragic thing is, neither did they, well not properly. It was used to make a tinto de verano", the typically Spanish summer drink of red wine mixed with soda and poured over ice. Usually the cheapest red wine is used, often from a carton."

The next morning, Pete located the bottle, "'There it was. A dusty old Petrus lying empty on top of all the beer bottles. My daughter didn't believe me when I told her how much it was actually worth. Then she cried a lot and asked if I could ever forgive her,' he said."

I'd like to think Pete has completely forgiven his daughter, especially since it appears this was an honest mistake. He admitted to leaving it out.. but still, that might have been the most expensive sangria ever made!

Let this story be a warning to you: don't leave the prized booze out for anyone to drink. I'd be happy to 'accidentally' drink your bottle of Petrus if you give me the opportunity. At that rate, leave the Pappy Van Winkle out too... it's going to be a long night!

    • Wouldn’t that be the best part of a terrible story? “…and they forgot the fruit.”

    • If it were me accidentally drinking the bottle, I’d have heard from my parents, “We brought you into this world; we can take you out.”
