Does fast food ruin your baby-making abilities?
Could fast food prevent you from conceiving?
Obese men who regularly eat fast food experience a drop in testosterone, reducing their reproduction capabilities, according to a new study.
The study, jointly carried out by Flinders University in Adelaide and UniSA (University of South Australia), found that those who indulged in a high-fat fast food meal (containing around 51 g of fat), had 25% less testosterone in their blood only an hour after eating. This remained lower for up to four hours.
The results were only seen in men who are already overweight, although it should be a warning to those who want to become fathers.
While many might believe it's the fat itself causing infertility issues, it's actually when it passes through the gut:
"Injecting fat into people had no effect on testosterone, so it is not the fat itself, it is the passage of fat through the gut that's doing it," says Kelton Tremellen, Flinders University's strategic professor of reproductive medicine.
