Vegan, gluten-free, low in calories and completely devoid of refined sugars and artificial sweeteners, we’re not kidding when we say that Bodega Bay hard seltzer is one saintly drink. But the goodness contained within each can isn’t the only string to this trendy brand’s bow – it’s currently ramping up stacks of additional brownie points with its charitable efforts, too.

All-round good eggs that they are, the team behind the Bodega Bay brand are investing at least 1% of their sales to support Thirst Project, a scheme that brings clean drinking water to people in need across 13 countries worldwide. Crack open an icy can of delicious, sparkling water-based alcoholic beverage, help to end the global water crisis... how about that for good karma?

What is Thirst Project?

Thirst Project is a nonprofit organisation that’s working to end the global water crisis by building freshwater wells in developing communities, where children typically don’t have strong enough immune systems to fight off diseases like cholera, dysentery and schistosomiasis.

By supplying these communities with clean, safe drinking water, waterborne disease rates can drop by up to 88% overnight – which is huge when you consider that these diseases kill more children every year than the likes of HIV, malaria and all world violence combined.

Not only that, but clean water also plays a critical role in effectively treating and managing HIV and AIDS in rural communities. Put simply, even if a person with HIV/AIDS in one of these communities had access to medical treatment or antiretroviral medication, drinking dirty, contaminated water could lead to diseases that would kill them faster than AIDS itself – so it’s easy to imagine the enormous impact a well filled with fresh, clean water would have.

The implications of walking to fetch water

Another unfortunate truth is that, in rural, developing communities, women and children spend on average six to eight hours each day walking to fetch water. The time that the children spend walking prevents them from going to school and getting an education – and the physical demand of hauling water over such a distance every day has numerous impacts on women’s health (for example, chronic fatigue, dehydration, and even, in some cases, miscarriages in pregnant women).

The time that women spend walking to fetch water, and the physical toll that the process takes on their bodies, prevents them from securing better employment opportunities to provide for their families – so having safe, clean drinking water close by could mean an all-important second income, contributing to economic development in the community.

So, how does it work?

Allow us to break it down...

Just 1 cent is all it takes for Thirst Project to provide 19 litres of drinking water – equal to a day's worth of clean water for one person in a developing community.

40p is the cost it takes Thirst Project to provide one person with a year’s worth of clean drinking water – all thanks to the low costs of implementing their clean water projects.

And £20? That’s the cost it takes Thirst Project to provide one person with clean drinking water for LIFE.

So remember – every time you treat yourself to a can of Bodega Bay hard seltzer, you’re not only making a healthier lifestyle choice, but you’re also helping to provide clean water to those who need it most. Way to purchase with purpose!

And that’s not all, folks...

Bodega Bay also works with Ecologi (formerly Offset Earth) to be a ‘Climate Positive Workforce’ and plant 100 trees per month, minimising its footprint on the planet and helping to turn the tide on the climate crisis.

And the cans that your favourite hard seltzer comes packaged up in? They’re not just there to look good. The brains behind Bodega Bay have chosen to use them because they’re not only 100% recyclable, but they can also be recycled infinitely, with no loss of quality. Amazing, eh?
