Feijoada, a popular Brazilian meat & black bean stew – Recipe

This comfort food is sometimes called the national dish of Brazil and owes its name to the main ingredient: black beans/feijão

I have made this recipe speedy by using store-bought black beans in a can and kept the flavors to the real Feijoada taste. I know a lot of people will not agree with the canned beans, but when you are running short of time and still want some variety in your kitchen, it is a good option.

Feijoada

It is a blend of juicy and fatty flavors of meat and creamy, soft; and mild flavors of the beans.

Ingredients

  • 250gms Beef Cubes
  • 150gm Beef Sausage (optional)
  • 400gms Black Beans (ready to eat or uncooked)
  • 1 Onion
  • 2 Bay Leaves
  • 2 Garlic Cloves
  • Seasoning (salt, black pepper and red chili flakes)
  • 250gms Beef Cubes

Instructions

Note: If you are using uncooked beans, please soak them in water for at least 3 hours before cooking

  1. Heat 3tbsp oil, add bay leaves, chopped onion, chopped garlic, and cook until soft and fragrant. Add beef cubes and cook for about 2 minutes. Add salt as per your taste, 1tbsp black pepper, 1tbsp red chili flakes and mix well.
  2. Add the drained uncooked black beans, add 4 cups of water and cook until the meat is tender and the beans are soft. This should take at least 45 minutes. Add sausages just 5 minutes before switching off the gas.
  3. If you are using canned black beans, add the entire can along with the sausage pieces, just 5 minutes before switching off the gas, as they are already cooked and mushy
  4. Garnish with spring onions.

Recipe Notes

This is really simple and easy on spices and ingredients. It is best served with white rice and cassava flour. However, I have enjoyed this easy and flavorful stew with white steam Rice and a Spinach stir-fry on the side
