‘FOK HING’ gin brand may be forced to change its name after formal complaints

This FOK HING gin must be good

The ‘Independent Complaints Panel’, which is essentially a self-regulating panel in the alcohol industry, is reportedly siding with a complaint filed against Fok Hing Gin as the name was deemed offensive, as per rule 3.3. - “a drink’s name, packaging and any promotional material should not cause serious or widespread offence”.

Hong Kong-based Gin brand FOK HING, part of the Incognito Group Limited, is fighting the complaint by arguing that it’s related to a Hong Kong slang term for good luck, and also a tribute to ‘Fuk Hing Lane’ in Hong Kong - and yes, it actually exists.

The complaint reads: “the name of the product is clearly intended to shock and be pronounced as an offensive term.”

Nicola Williams, Chair of the Independent Complaints Panel, said this is actually the first time since the addition of rule 3.3 that a “product’s name and packaging was considered under the rule in terms of offensive language.”

Incognito Group still hasn’t changed the name - I’m assuming the Complaints Panel could force them but that would require a full-blown lawsuit - but they did say they will “update the reverse label on the bottle to include more information about the brand’s heritage”.

What do you think? Should everyone get a FOK HING grip and just these things a bit less seriously OR do you agree that the name is offensive? Let me know what you think in the comments.

  • Keep the name! These sensitive little snowflakes need to get a grip on their feelings. I wouldn't care if they named it the actual F word, who cares, if it bothers you don't buy it.

  • They should get a grip - not everyone in the world speaks English . Including the heritage information on the label should be enough.

  • It sounds like the Independent Complaints Panel might have done the Fok Hing folks a favor... I can see this becoming a popular meme now that people know about it. To be honest, if I'd seen the label before seeing this article, I would NOT have thought of the other F word. I guess the ICP has a dirty mind. 😏
