Picture your favourite movie villain, slowly eating a banana... it makes you feel uncomfortable, doesn't it? If we see a movie character eating cherries or strawberries, it would be better to keep the kids out of the room... What about kiwis? No hero has the time to peel that.
But apples... they're fresh and ready to go!
Many characters have taken a bite of the forbidden fruit, and it's not just because they want to keep the doctor away.
Some use it to show their lack of interest for what the other has to say. Others use it to assert domination, eating while in an important discussion. Others use it to break the tension of a scene, where the loud crunch an apple bite gives, is key. Sometimes they use a knife to look more threatening. Others... just want to look like jerks. But the worst of them all, are those who take a bite and throw the whole apple away.
Here we have some examples:
Captain Jack Sparrow in "Pirates of the Caribbean" eating a green apple while arguing with Barbossa. In this case it is even worse because Barbossa has been cursed to an existence of living death and he can't taste anything.
Draco Malfoy in "Harry Potter", eating an apple and showing little interest in Hagrid's lessons.
Kaffee in "A Few Good Men", while hearing the details and deciding over a case.
James T Kirk in 2009 "Star Trek", eating an apple while making everything explode and not caring about the test he is taking.
Indiana Jones being Indiana Jones.
Leonidas in "300" casually eating an apple just after killing hundreds of men.
Maybe it's the crunch, maybe the innocence of the fruit itself, but we can all agree that eating an apple during a scene makes the character look badass or a jerk. Either way, it works.
If you want to look like you have the control of the situation, eat an apple.

Another good post. Good job.
Sleepless in Seattle: Meg Ryan is slowly peeling an apple in one piece when she hears “Sleepless in Seattle” on talkback radio for the first time. Later in the film Tom Hanks talks to his son who is starting to forget his mother and says “She could peel an apple in one long curly strip. The whole apple.”
