Greggs fan works out Yum Yum recipe

Greggs has been withholding this one, but one determined fan has replicated its Yum Yums

Greggs has been releasing a recipe each week for its delicious baked goods – and they've called the series Greggs It Yourself (or GIY). So far, they've shown us how to do a number of savoury faves, but what about those of us with a sweet tooth?

Well, as everyone's favourite non-violent political ethicist, Mahatma Gandhi said, "we need not wait to see what others do". Clearly, TikTok user @caughtsnackin has been reading up on his anti-colonial nationalist literature, because he's decided to be the change he wants to see in the world and come up with his own recipe.

@caughtsnackin has released a video of his recipe for Greggs' much-loved Yum Yums on TikTok, a sharing platform for videos of 15 seconds in length. Yum Yums are essentially donuts shaped into a twist, and glazed with icing.

According to the video, the recipe requires 150g strong white flour, 25g melted butter, 1 egg, 1/2 tsp salt, 1/2 tbsp caster sugar, 7g instant yeast and 70ml warm water for the dough, and 1/2 cup of icing sugar and 2 tbsp water for the glaze. The voiceover says to begin by adding the flour, melted butter, egg (whisked), salt, sugar, yeast and warm water into a bowl and mix until doughy.

Then, viewers are instructed to roll the dough into a ball shape and leave in a bowl to prove. After it’s risen, @caughtsnackin suggests the very technical step of ‘giving it a punch for the culture.’ Following that you need to roll out the dough into a circular shape and cut it into four sections (which can each be cut into three strips).

These strips need to be slit down the middle, but the ends need to remain connected. Then, all that's left is to twist it into a kind of lattice structure and fry it in some hot oil.

Once they're fried, cover them in a glaze made of icing sugar and water, and voilà.
