Grocery Store Eggs vs. Pet Chicken Eggs

Which would you rather eat?

Some of you know that I have six pet hens. In the past, they produced so many eggs that my husband and I couldn't possibly eat them all, and most of them were given away to friends and neighbors. With the recent expansion of our family, we've actually been forced to buy eggs because there aren't enough!  I needed two eggs for another batch of low sodium banana bread today, and noticed that the yolks of the eggs from my happy, little pet chickens have a much sunnier aspect than the pale yolks from their factory farmed cousins' eggs... I will be buying more baby chicks next spring so we won't need any more grocery store eggs!

  • So much richer in taste! However, I stand by what I said ages ago - the ideal set-up is a generous neighbour with backyard chickens. Not your own coop.

  • I prefer them from a local farmer instead of the supermarket. You can tell the difference by flavor, color and the shell. The one from the farmer is way stronger than the supermarket, most times even easier to remove!

    • My ladies get crushed oyster shells as a calcium supplement. It not only strengthens the shells, but it keeps their bones strong, too - if they didn't get supplements, the calcium for the egg shells would be leached from their bones. Maybe...

    • Yeah! We bought 'shell grit' for our chickens but we never actually thought of re-using their own shells like you've done. Interesting.

  • Fresh eggs are always better and have a richer flavor.

    • I always thought so, too. Plus, since I know my ladies are treated well., the eggs ate guilt-free, too! 😊
