Name something more quintessentially British than a cup of tea, we'll wait.

Whether it's first thing in the morning as you sit sleepily at your desk, with a bacon sandwich after a rather wild night, or a classic bone china cup and saucer moment at your grandma's, any Brit will say that tea is the answer to all your problems.

And we sure take our tea seriously, even with preference for either PG Tips or Yorkshire Tea, If you get the answer wrong... you may be on to a deal breaker. Many would say, if you're buying separate bags of tea, you need to rethink your relationship. Nobody should have to live like that.

Spill the tea!

Today is National Tea Day, which also happens to fall on her Majesty the Queen's Birthday and thus has been dubbed the most British day of the year. Raise your cups; your mugs, your pint glasses (there should never be a limit to how you drink your tea, we've got you) and pray your cup shall never be empty! Hazaar.

Established six years ago by Tea enthusiast Diaz Ayub, National Tea Day is a celebration of the nation's favourite beverage. Diaz says, “It’s no secret that a cup of black tea is the nation’s favourite drink. It brings people together, it makes everything better."

They really are words to live by. However, this year the organisers of National Tea Day are urging Brits to try something a little different. "This year, we want to share the amazing possibilities that come with a cup of tea." Diaz says, "From matching teas with different types of food to enjoying amazing tea cocktails, or teas with health benefits, there’s so much more to our humble brew.”

Do we hear a tea tasting event on the horizon?

Funnily enough, that's not far off. Diaz says that tea comes in lots of varieties, flavours and complexities and holds many similarities to wine (this honestly just keeps getting better, doesn't it?).

As alcohol consumption starts to decline, especially with young adults, many venues are starting to offer a 'wine list' style menu, solely dedicated to tea. "Whether it’s pairing black tea with gamey meats, white tea with seafood or enjoying a Friday night fizz tea, there’s a tea that works for everything," Diaz says.

So without further ado, here is an expertly put together list of all the best tea and biscuit combos you should be drinking this National Tea Day!

1. English Breakfast Tea with milk and shortbread biscuits

Dunk these for a rich, malty, creamy, buttery hug in a mug. It sounds like a winner to us!

2. Green tea with Bourbon biscuits

Chocolate with ‘the healthy one’? It may sounds off putting, but really you should try it. It might just work!

3. Berry Tea with Jammy Dodgers

How did we never think of this before?! You’ll feel all kinds of fruity with this berry explosion.

4. Lemon & Ginger Tea with ginger biscuits

This just SOUNDS like it's good for you. An almost tropical pairing with a bit of a kick.

5. Chamomile tea with pink wafers

Going posh? Bone chinaware is a must for this fancy, fragrant combination. Or if you're feeling chic and minimalist, why not try it in a glass mug? How very Bourgeoisie of you.

6. Peppermint tea with chocolate digestives

It makes sense. Chocolate and mint? A genius pairing. It’s an After Eight for any time of day.

7. White tea with custard creams

A vanilla pair, but far from boring. Creamy, buttery goodness, this is one for Sunday afternoons.

8. Rooibos with Malted Milks

Big, malty flavours for tea traditionalists, we reckon this could impress even the most picky of builders.

Would you try any of these tea and biscuit pairings?

  • I love that classic English breakfast tea with shortbreads, and recently discovered peppermint tea and chocolate on a whim. Nice article 😊

  • I used to be given homemade shortbread from a neighbor every Christmas and it was so nice with a cup of tea.

  • First cup in the morning with a Chocolate Digestive or maybe 2...

  • Twinings Strong English Breakfast Tea with arrowroot biscuits, or rich tea. Favourite biscuits are dark chocolate Hobnobs, but I don't find them to compliment tea too well! 😊
