How to get a free Egg McMuffin for breakfast this morning
This is the real reason McDonald's has decided today is National Egg McMuffin Day
There’s a national day for pretty much every food out there, from oatmeal to pistachio. And today is a particularly delectable national food day.
McDonald’s has deemed March 2 National Egg McMuffin Day, and it’s giving away free Egg McMuffins to celebrate.
Download the McDonald’s app and get the offer between 6 and 10:30am local time today only.
The legendary sandwich was first created in early 1971 by Herb Peterson, an owner and operator in Santa Barbara, California.
“While we’re giving the Egg McMuffin its moment, we’re really honoring our breakfast fans who have woken up with McDonald’s breakfast for nearly 50 years. And we just thought, ‘hey, why not declare March 2 as National Egg McMuffin Day?’,” said David Tovar, Vice President of U.S. Communications. “We’re always looking for new ways to show our fans love and remind them, no matter where they might be, a great tasting and convenient breakfast is just around the corner for them at McDonald’s.”
And hey, we’re definitely not one to turn down a free sandwich, not least a delicious Egg McMuffin. But we’re thinking there might be something else behind McDonald’s decision to name today National Egg McMuffin Day besides just wanting to celebrate the sandwich’s illustrious history.
Today just so happens to be the day when another fast-food heavyweight enters the breakfast arena. As we reported in Food Tribe a few weeks back, Wendy’s is launching its all-new breakfast menu today.
It’s a hotly anticipated menu launch, and it’s likely that McDonald’s is taking this opportunity to remind us of their long-standing expertise when it comes to morning grub. By rolling this promotion out via the app, McDonald’s is looking to build consumer loyalty and entice them back with future offers.
R.J. Hottovy, an analyst at financial services firm Morningstar, told CNN that increasing the McDonald’s app’s user base is key. He said offering free Egg McMuffins will keep the restaurant ‘top of mind’ as Wendy’s invests in marketing its new menu.
"It's more of a defensive move rather than an offensive move," he said about the promotion.
Is the Egg McMuffin all it's ... *cracked* up to be? (Sorry, couldn't resist)
