How to make smash burgers: stress-relieving AND delicious
BBQ chef Ben Forte gets smashy on his Kamado Joe
When you’re barbecuing, you have to have burgers, right? It’s just not the same without them.
The simple pleasure of meat in a bun is basically unbeatable. You might think making your own burgers is a bit too much faff, and usually resort to buying pre-made ones...
However, a smash burger takes out the prep time, takes out some of your aggression, and is a really great way of making a burger that keeps the juiciness, but gives you loads of that delicious crispiness, too.

Ingredients
- 500g beef mince (125g per burger for singles or half it for a double)
- 4 x slices of burger cheese
- 4 x brioche buns
- Ketchup or burger sauce
Instructions
- Divide the beef mince into four balls (eight if you want to do thinner double stacked).
- Setup your grill with a flat plate griddle or cast iron frying pan and get it nice and hot, around 200C.
- Put your meat balls onto the flat plate and smash them with a steak press or metal spatula.
- After around three minutes, flip the burgers.
- When the burger is almost cooked, place your slice of cheese on the burger and close the lid on your BBQ.
- Finally, add your sauce to the burger and then put the top on and add a splash of water to the flat plate just next to the burgers so it creates steam. Shut the lid once more. This makes the bun super soft and also gives it that awesome shine.
- Remove your burgers, place them on the bottom bun, and enjoy.
