I made a chicken biryani and it tasted QUITE GOOD

This is an important moment in my life. I never imagined it would happen.

My missus said, ‘This actually tastes a bit like Indian food,’ which is one of the loveliest things she’s ever said to me, after ‘would you like some more toast?’.

It’s a bit of a cheat, as I used a ready made tikka paste, then pimped the pot with brown cardamom and a cinnamon stick. I slightly overcooked the chuck in the frying stage. I didn’t believe how much it was going to cook in the lid-on rice-cooking stage.

But it tasted like a biryani. The proprietor of my local, Indian Zing, would heave this into the bin, saying ‘This biryani is bollocks’, but in doing so he would have positively identified it as ‘a biryani’. So that’s a result.

Next time, I’m going to try this from scratch, starting with the raw spices and building my own tandoor in the garden. Stand by.

  • That looks not bad at all which, as you always say, means pretty good. Definitely recognisable biryani. Did you do an omelette too? I’ve never really understood why it comes with omelette. Also, please can we have some of your home made cooking videos, even if they have to be made on a two ring hob in the garage? You cooking cheers me up.

    • Hoping to, but slightly scared of walking the 100 paces to my bunker in case I’m lynched.

    • I can see it now ‘Fail exclusive - James May cooks within yards of another person - it’s through a wall but we don’t care we have exclusive photos’ Just don’t pass that neighbour’s house. You’re allowed to walk to the shops...
