I Made... ORANGE CAKE –and it tastes ACE!
Just drop everything and make one, NOW!
I think by now you all know I LOVE chocolate. No matter where or what, I will choose something with chocolate. Be it cakes, desserts, beverages, I would go with chocolate! It's something you know won't disappoint... ever. It's always delicious and trustworthy; you know what you're gonna get when you ask for it. And I very rarely choose fruit flavours.
A few days ago, I had a cake with whipped cream frosting and tangerine on top. I couldn't believe how amazing it tasted. The sweetness of whipped cream matched perfectly with the citrusy of the tangerine. So I thought why not try and make something like that, A simple cake with frosting and tangerine. While I was looking for a basic cake recipe, I came across these eye-catching orange cakes with their vibrant colours. Then I thought: we have an orange tree; now is the orange season; we've got some oranges. Let's make it happen!
I know the oranges are blur here. But I love this pic of our orange tree!
After a good research, I found a decent recipe and decided to make my first ever orange cake! Now I've made cakes with fruits before. But, they are basically ordinary cakes with fruit slices in them. َusing fruit juice, however? This was my first attempt!
So I went to the garden and picked 4 fresh oranges. This gave me a little more than a cup of juice.
Choosing and picking!
Let's start baking!
I needed orange zest so I made that and the recipe suggested for lemon zest too. I used lime instead. Making this cake was a pretty usual process. Just sifting, mixing, beating and so on.
Our oranges are very zesty and quite sour. I was a bit worried because I thought: this cake probably won't taste nice. But coming this far, I decided to just go on and see what will happen. Surprisingly the juice and zests went well with other ingredients as I tasted the batter. So I was sure this will be a good cake if only I wouldn't mess up the remaining process!
With the batter ready, I poured it into the pan and put it in the oven. After about 15 minutes, the whole kitchen was smelling amazing. Do you know the Bakeries that actually bake the goods rather than just selling them? Imagine you are passing by them. That yummy scent which invites you to get inside and buy whatever they are baking, that smell was in our kitchen. It was heavenly!
Everything was promising at this point. The cake looked, smelled and tasted amazing.
After 35 minutes of baking, the cake was golden and ready to be out! After it cooled down, I tried to take it out of the pan, but unfortunately, it just stuck to it. So with a lot of effort, I was able to get our delicate, crumbly cake out.
The holy text
The recipe, especially in baking is like a sacred, holy text. You must obey everything precisely to get the promised result. But, I had to change one or two things here and there; so it's the reason that my cake is different. Please always follow the recipe!
Anyway, with a heavy heart, I moved it carefully to a plate and poured some ze on it.
This is the most delicious cake I've ever made! Family approved!
Except for this sad occurrence, everything else was brilliant! I was astonished by how tasty it was. Honestly, I didn't think I would love any other cake, but this orange one is on my top three cakes list now!
An everyday delight
Sponge and chiffon cakes are usually base cakes. Which means they aren't really flavour-packed. They should be serves with frostings like glaze, sauce, ganache or feelings like whipped cream cream cheese and so on. But this orange cake is marvellous by itself! It has everything: the look, the taste, the scent. It is a perfect everyday cake for breakfast, snack or teatime. I think it could make a delightful gift as well!
I'm in love!
I suggest it to everyone who reads this. Gloss over my messy presentation and go grab some oranges and enjoy this cake. You won't be disappointed!
And I think the reason that I wasn't a fond of fruitcakes before was probably my terrible experience at supermarkets cakes and other edibles! They have artificial taste in them. So I've never tasted something decent and natural up until now.
