The food pictured above is porcupine meatballs and mashed potatoes. This is a dish that stirs a lot of emotions for me. The reason is because this is a very special dish my grandma used to fix me. She fixed this for me from the time I was a small child till my late teens early twenties.

Its a very simple meal made with hamburger, rice, tomato soup and seasoning's. The meal s not expensive to fix, but my grandma was very poor. Now she would not say she was poor. In fact she would say she had more wealth than the richest person. Her wealth was her family and the love we had for each other.

It made her so happy to make this for me. It always came with a hug as well. I so miss those. As I got older I found she would deny herself things, including food just to save enough money to make this for me. When my parents found out she was doing this they started giving her money so she could make me my favorite food. As I got older I started giving her money so she would fix it for me.

She did not cook them in any fancy way just an old green electric skillet that looked straight out of the 60's or 70's. And a small pan for mashed potatoes. And with those simple things she fixed my favorite meal of my life.

Many of my family tried to recreate porcupine meatballs but could never get it right. Even with her recipe it never was the same. Of course she was known for not giving out the exact recipe. The one thing that was always missing was the love she put into making it for me. That ingredient is not found in a recipe.

So when she passed away almost twenty years ago I felt porcupine meatballs did as well. It hurt knowing I would never get to eat my favorite meal or get the hug that come with it ever again. She passed shortly after I married my beautiful and loving wife.

When my wife learned how much porcupine meatballs meant to me she made it a mission to recreate them for me. After many attempts she was getting closer to that flavor I missed so much. After many more tries she can now perfectly make them the way grandma did. The reason she was able to when no one else could was because she had that one special ingredient love. So I still get to enjoy my favorite meal and when I do I go back to being a child eating and smiling and seeing my grandma smiling back at me. Now I just miss that hug.

If you all made it this far thank you. I really wanted to share this with you. I love you all.

  • This happy story and a bit sad it the same time especially the sad part when your grandma passed away. But it's great to have a meal which bring you a lot of nice and loving memories! To me is also important love giving while cooking, probably that's why I'm enjoying that so much.

    • Thank you Emilia. Food does hold a lot of memories for us. Or in some cases cooking can hold those memories as well.

  • Moving post Doug. I think often the memories and feelings attached to the food are more important as the taste

  • I was thinking about my grandma and the memories of her through every line of your post. In Iran Thursdays (especially in the afternoon) are the days we remember those who are not with us any more. We go to their tomb, talk to them, pray for them and donate some food (like halva, dates, fruits and...) so they be happier in their place. Thanks for reminding me about it.

Now my grandma's tomb is about 3 hours away from me, but I could pray for her, from here!
