James May Chapatti Recipe? No Thanks!

I have given up making chapattis. Anyone want some Atta?

There are plenty of internet resources that seek to instruct on how simple it is to make chapattis, and how they are about tuppence each as a result, and why would anyone buy the ones you get in the Indian food aisle, which are expensive, and a bit rubbish.

So, I did try, but my time and exasperation are worth something. i find the dough gets sticky, its hard to roll thin enough, and I cook it to be like cardboard. In fact they are as bad as the pre-packaged ones you just heat up.

So on a whim while visiting Morrisons - who hands down have the best 'world food' departments in Bedford and Letchworth - I saw these and thought I'd give them a try to preserve my sanity.

As you can see, I had the pan a bit hot. What you can't see is:

- they do puff up somewhat, with no messing with naked flames etc, but they go down in the warmer because I got the timing wrong

- very, very quick and easy - don't defrost

- taste/feel better than ones I make

- sadly quite a lot of plastic waste keeping them separate in the packet

I can't see those on the M web site at the moment but other brands/sites are available for 4 quid or so.

If they are £5, ie 25p each - and I use 4 - its just £1. And I got so very much of my life back, its a no-brainer. They are better than the 'just heat them' ones, believe me.

  • Over in India, we pretty much always knead our own atta😂 it's actually simple once you try it 2-3 times.

    • I've tried several times! i can't get the balance right, it goes from too try to a sticky mess very quickly. I'm sure its a matter of practice.
