JUNK FOOD REVIEW: Zapp's Boudin Balls!
Cajun style sausage & rice fritter balls - they were pretty good!
Back in 2019, I flew down to Texas to help my mom drive a Mustang back up north to Pennsylvania. That road trip took us through Louisiana, and I got to try Boudin Balls for the first time.
Boudin balls are made from boudin sausage; a traditional Cajun/creole sausage made from pork, rice, and spices. In boudin balls, the casings are removed from the sausage, they are rolled into balls, breaded and then fried. They are EXCELLENT! I fell in love with them on that road trip but hadn't had them since!
Mmmmmm!!!
The Zapp's Boudin Balls, discovered in a local grocer's frozen section, are not as good as the "real thing", but they are pretty damn good. I threw a handful of these into the air fryer and cooked them until they were piping hot and crispy on the outside. I grabbed a couple of condiments out of the 'fridge, prepared to supplement the flavor, but it turned out I didn't need anything on them! The Zapp's Boudin Balls were packed with flavor!!!
Not bad!
Let's take closer look!
I will keep my eye out for these and stock up on 'em!

Louisiana native here and I was so excited to see these in my coastal North Carolina grocery store today. Having boudin balls usually requires a 2500 mile round trip to enjoy this delicacy. My excitement was soon extinguished once I got home and tasted them. These ARE NOT like any boudin balls I’ve ever had in Louisiana! First, boudin doesn’t contain andouille sausage, bell pepper, or raw onion. There’s something about the binder in these that reminds me of crawfish pie filling. They’re not horrible, just not real boudin balls. Perhaps if they called them something different. For non-natives, these are not boudin balls! Disappointed!
I agree with you! The last time I was in Texas was to help my mom drive a car home and we drove through Louisiana. We made a point to stop and buy a bunch of boudin balls and they were PHENOMENAL! These are just a really good snack food for the...

Those look good.
They sound good. I will have to keep a eye out for them and give them a day in court.
I am heading to Louisiana in a few days. Looking forward to enjoying some boudin while visiting family! I love how there are meat markets where you can go in, order up some boudin, and walk out with it wrapped in a paper towel ready to eat as is. Interesting factoid here. The pronunciation of boudin varies depending on location. The further north you travel in Louisiana, the more likely you are to hear the ending "n" consonant sound. Regardless of pronunciation, boudin is delicious! 😎
