Now that lockdown 2.0 is in full effect in the UK, many of us are likely to get our dinners from a takeaway. Along with the usual line-up of pizza, fish & chips and a curry, the humble kebab might be something that you leave out. Well, 34 year-old Derek Breakey from Manchester has set himself the challenge to eat over 60 kebabs in 30 days for charity.

He'll be raising money for Nerve Tumours UK which is a charity that supports his ten year-old daughter. Breakey aims to raise at least £1,000 for the charity which helps people with the rare conditions Neurofibromatosis and Schwannomatosis.

‘I’ve been training for this since I was six-years-old. I know I can do it,’ Derek explains. ‘It’s a charity close to my heart, so hopefully I can help them out.’

This record-breaking attempt was first suggested to Breakey to by his friends when he subconsciously devoured 39 kebabs in just 28 days – that's a lot of meat.

‘I’ve been on that group for about four months and I’ve reviewed 82 kebabs. My record is 39 kebabs in 28 days. I had nine in a week and three in one day. After that I thought, I might as well do it properly and do it for charity’ said Breakey. 'My record is 39 kebabs in 28 days. Breakey, who works as a full-time photographer, said that he's not too concerned about the toll the 60 kebabs will have on his overall health. He also expressed that he's not fussed with the number of calories he will be consuming, which will be rather plentiful I imagine.

‘I do have my favourite haunts but I’ll be trying lots of different places. Levenshulme Bakery is great, Red Cherry, Rusholme Chippy – there are loads. The perfect kebab, in my opinion, needs quality meat, the bread has to be fresh and made in a clay oven, fresh in-house sauce and fresh salad. I will never get sick of kebabs. They feed my soul.’

    • Yes. I like a food challenge, and eating Donkey Kebabs is easy.

Just wish I had a spare £180 to do it.

    • Well, if that is one of the only things I was eating, sure! I'd probably get rather bored after a while.
