Not the hero we deserve, but the hero we needed

Matt Ellis, from St Neots in Cambridgshire, has just set a new Guinness World Record for the most pubs visited in a 24-hour pub crawl.

Ellis visited 51 pubs in the area. He started at The Regal in Cambridge, and then 24 hours and 50 pubs later, he ended his journey at The Weeping Ash in St Neots.

He’s my new hero. Not just because of what he did but also because of why he did it. Ellis said people sometimes underestimate how hard it has been for pubs to survive the pandemic and he wanted to do something to highlight the issue.

”It was all about the joy of pubs and the people you meet,” he told the BBC. “Pubs over the last 18 months have had a very difficult time. I am a big fan of pubs – the contribution they make to our society and the camaraderie you can enjoy in them.“

The Guinness World Records team only set one rule: Ellis had to consume at least 125 ml [of any beverage] at each pub. He didn’t use any forms of transport other than his own feet, averaging 2+ pubs every hour but he has admitted he mostly drank orange juice and Diet Coke. So yeah, he cheated a little bit. But he’s still a hero.

  • Here in Melbourne, meanwhile we set two records. One is for number of pubs we haven't visited in 18 months and two is for number of days we have been in Lockdowns!
