National Fish and Chip Awards 2020: Winners revealed

The National Fish and Chip Awards have identified the best shops in the UK. Does yours get a mention?

The conflict of the cods, fight of the fryers, and battle of batters is over. Yes, the National Fish and Chip Awards have made their choices, and we can now bring you the winners.

The award ceremony took plaice (sorry) in the glamorous Royal Lancaster Hotel – a departure from the greasy shops most of the winners find themselves in daily.

The shops were adjudicated throughout the year by mystery judges, who took note of customer service, sustainability efforts, staff training and, of course, the quality of the fish and chips themselves.

    The Overall Winners

First Place: The Cod's Scallops, Wollaton, Nottingham, Nottinghamshire

Reeling in the prize is The Cod's Scallops in Nottingham. This shop has been open since 2011, and serves unusual fish like gurnard, swordfish and scallops. Check out their website here!

Second Place: Shap Chippy, Shap, Penrith, Cumbria

I hope the guys and gals from Shap Chippy won't have a chip on their shoulder about being pipped to the post. Their owner has a background in fishmongery, so the fish sourced and processed here is of only the highest quality. Have a look at their website here!

Third Place: Fish & Chips @ Weston Grove, Chester, Cheshire

This shop won the overall in 2019, but I'm sure they'll still be delighted to be collecting 3rd place this year. Open since only 2016, this shop, ran by Richard and Josette, has shot to the upper echelon due to their uncompromised focus on quality ingredients. Have a look at their website here.

    • I'm disappointed there's not a Most Improved award. I have a relish for that backhanded accolade.

    • How come nothing from Norfolk? Ie Gorleston or Norwich? Some of the best fish and chip places about. And believe me, I’ve travelled.

    • I live round the corner from the Wollaton one. Never been, so I think some investigative journalism is called for.
