Nordburger's Spicy Chicken Burger: My unconventional go-to
It's spicy, and it's chicken. Sounds perfect to me.
As a fan of doing things differently, when it comes to my favourite burger near me, my go-to is an unconventional choice by burger standards.
It’s from a small chain here in Adelaide, South Australia called Nordburger, which at its four locations across the city aims to deliver a New York burger joint feel, with items such as chicken and waffles for breakfast on weekends and imported cans of American soft drinks driving that point home.
I’ve tried the majority of the menu at Nordburger by this point, although I eat it far less these days since starting to diet more intensely last year, but despite knowing what variety they have on offer, I still keep going back to one particular burger, which I allowed myself a cheat day to revisit.
As a lover of all things hot (although this only dishes up a very mild level of heat) and a huge fan of chicken burgers just to be a real contrarian, the Spicy Chicken Burger is, as the name implies, just about everything I look for in a burger.
Aside from the light and fluffy bun that holds it all together, none of the traditional burger ingredients are present here. It’s not just the big piece of melt-in-your-mouth buttermilk fried chicken – although you can have the same thing with a beef patty as the Hotburger – but the rest of the fillings as well.
Fresh coleslaw, pickled jalapeños, red onion, and chipotle mayo round out this simple and well-balanced burger which just feels a refreshing change from the standard lettuce, tomato, and cheese – not that there’s anything wrong with that.
I usually team it with a side of tater-tots as I did here, primarily because they feel to me at least to be a bit less heavy than fries due to being softer and fluffier. Plus, I’m yet to encounter anywhere else here that serves them.
At A$12.40 all up for my order as seen here (that's roughly £6.30 or US$8.20 at current exchange rates) I feel like it's very fairly priced given the quality of it, especially when you compare it to the average order at somewhere such as McDonalds which, if your order contains items not found on the dollar menu, will easily exceed it.
It might not be your average burger, but that's exactly why I love it, and why I keep going back to it no matter what else I try.
