Now you can buy fruit, veggies and dairy directly from Panera

Panera Grocery comes as the industry has been impacted by plummeting sales

Restaurants have been pivoting to takeout and pantry offerings in light of the Covid-19 pandemic restrictions. Panera is the latest resourceful chain to announce a new kind of offering to its roster.

It’s called Panera Grocery and it’s pretty much exactly what it sounds like. You’ll now be able to order produce like fresh blueberries, vine-ripened tomatoes, avocados and more. They’re also selling dairy products like gallons of milk, Greek yogurt, cream cheese spread and kids' yogurt tubes. You can also grab loaves of freshly baked bread and bagels.

When you order through the bakery chain’s website or app, you’ll see an option for Panera Grocery come up next to the store’s usual menu offerings.

The grocery items will get to your kitchen table safely, of course: you’ll receive them through either contactless delivery, drive-up or drive-thru. Panera is also on Grubhub.

“From limited choices on grocery shelves to the growing need to limit the number of trips outside of the home, it is an incredibly stressful time when it comes to putting wholesome food on the table, and we knew Panera could help,” Panera CEO Niren Chaudhary said in a press release. “With this new service we can help deliver good food and fresh ingredients from our pantry to yours, helping provide better access to essential items that are increasingly harder to come by.”

As well as helping customers, the move will support Panera’s business. According to the NPD group, restaurants transactions fell 42% during the week ending March 29, compared with a year ago. And Chaudhary told CNBC that the chain lost half its business once its dining rooms closed.

“It’s a win for our associates because we will be able to keep our cafes open longer, and it’s great from a business standpoint because it should be incremental profit and revenue for us at a time when we desperately need it,” he said.
