Old-school honey biscuits recipe – taking it back to the 1950s
A throwback to the 1950s, in biscuit form!
My youngest sister was looking through my grandma's recipe book recently and found a whole load of newspaper cuttings from what looks like the 1950s. The cuttings were full of recipes for things like biscuits and party food.
These honey biscuits were one of the things there was a recipe for, so we decided to have a go at making them!

Ingredients
- 4 oz plain/all purpose flour or white spelt flour
- 4 oz wholemeal flour or wholemeal spelt flour
- 4 oz butter/margarine
- 3 oz runny honey
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1 tsp mixed spice
- A pinch of salt
- 1 large egg
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 200 degrees C (180 degrees C if it's a fan oven).
- Cream the butter and the honey together at high speed in a freestanding mixer until the mixture is light and fluffy.
- Turn the speed down and crack the large egg into the mixture, slowly beating until it's fully incorporated into the mix.
- Add in plain white/white spelt flour, wholemeal/wholemeal spelt flour, baking powder, salt and mixed spice and beat on medium speed until a thick dough forms.
- Roll out the dough on a floured surface to a consistent 2cm (just under an inch) thickness using a rolling pin.
- Use a cookie cutter to cut the dough into the cookie shapes you want, removing and re-rolling any excess dough.
- Lay the cookies on a baking tray lined with greaseproof paper and prick holes all the way through the dough with a fork.
- Bake for 15-20 mins.
Recipe Notes
If you want something sweeter, you can sandwich two of the biscuits together with some frosting or buttercream in the middle. We tried cream cheese and it worked very well!

Those sound pretty interesting
I like the use of honey as opposed to sugar - these look yummy!
I think this was a recipe from When rationing was still implimented as sugar was really hard to find and honey is always a good sub. Well done finding this😆🖒
