One of the most popular German artists has a song about Currywurst
It's not just the Italians who sing about food...
The ultimate arbiter of all things Italian, FT's very own Valentina Testa recently posted two funny Italian songs about food. This made me wonder whether we have something similar in Germany. And indeed, we have!
Herbert Grönemeyer sings about Currywurst.
Currywurst is one of the quintessential German fast food items. It's basically a Bratwurst cut into pieces and covered with a spicy tomato-based sauce (mostly some kind of ketchup) that contains, you guessed it, lots of curry powder. Usually served with french fries, it can be quite good. I must have had a lot of Currywurst in my school days!
Herbert Grönemeyer is one of the most popular German artists. He originally comes from Bochum, the same city, in which I grew up. Currywurst is very popular in that region of Germany so he made a song about it. He sings it in the dialect of the region (the Ruhr district) and the song is actually quite funny, especially if you understand that dialect. Unfortunately I couldn't find a really good video.
Here's my humble attempt at translation:
If you go downtown, what's going to get you full, a Currywurst.
Returning from your shift there's nothing better than Currywurst
French fries with it, give me two Currywurst straight away!
When you're really down, you need something to chew on, Currywurst

Actually he always sings like that 😁 It remains one of the unsolved mysteries of modern times why this guy, who doesn't have a singing voice at all, went on to become one of the most popular German singers 😕. That said, currywurst works well...

My son loves anything with curry. Smother with HP brown sauce and boardwalk french fries and a good ale you have my weekend food project. Love the thought.
