- Pizza teriyaki chicken

Teriyaki chicken pizza is a Japanese favourite, but as an Italian, I'm not sure

What do you think about it?

I love Japan and of course I love Japanese food. I also love Italian food and that's no great surprise, is it? But what if the two gastronomic cultures overlap?

The favourite Japanese pizza topping seems to be Teriyaki Chicken. And the teriyaki sauce base is made up of soy sauce, sake, sugar, and mirin.

I love Teriyaki Chicken. And of course, I love pizza. But... Teriyaki chicken on a pizza? Thinking about it seems dry.

In Italy, no pizzeria prepares this topping – it's probably illegal – and I cannot do it at home without triggering diplomatic incidents, so I ask the Tribers: what do you think?

  • Let's face the cruel truth - pizza is no longer Italian πŸ˜€

Yes, it used to be, but the Italians were too successful exporting it to pretty much everywhere in the world. It has been adopted by different cultures so now nobody can seriously expect that the world will stick to the Italian way of preparing pizza.

So, teriyaki chicken seems fully justified. Although, truth be told, I'd have teriyaki chicken first and then a proper Italian pizza πŸ˜‹

  • Yes, teriyaki chicken, like any chicken on pizza, is amazing - and cause there's so much sauce and cheese and what not, it's never dry.
