Let's take a moment to unravel the vast and complicated world of wine and spirits. You've seen those booths that say "Ask me anything, I'm a scientist"? Think of this as a similar Q&A for the comments section. I will try my *gosh-darndest (*it just means "best," for those outside of the USA) to answer everyone's question in an accurate and timely fashion. If you have a useful piece of trivia you'd like to contribute or validate, please share those in the comments as well!

  • I prefer red wines to white wines generally. Is there a difference in the different grape flavours at all or is it in my head? A question from an inquisitive pleb.

    • Different grapes definitely have different flavors and aromas. A vine’s growing environment is equally influential. And then you have various winemaking techniques that will contribute to a wine’s personality. I promise it’s not in...

  • If I'm going to have a red with seafood, which red should it be?

    • Fish is usually a pretty delicate protein, but certainly cuts of tuna steak, swordfish, or salmon, can be paired with a light to medium bodied, low tannin reds with no detectable oak. Garnacha/Grenache, Gamay, Montepulciano d’Abruzzo,...

  • Hellooo ! So, I know a fair bit about wine (although the biggest thing I know is that the more you know the more there is to learn...), but I always struggle when you get asked by a somm, or in a wine shop what you usually drink/what you usually like. It's just such a broad question for me, because it totally depends on my mood, what I'm eating, the weather, how I'm feeling etc.etc. I never know whether to say, 'well I love a 2014 Petrus' (obviously never tried that, sadly), or whether to say, 'I love Italian wines', or 'I love pinot noir' or... basically, what level of detail should you go into when someone is recommending you a wine and asks what you like? Sorry that's a very long and rambling question!

    • Ooh, this is a tough one. I still wrestle with this because I'm usually asking for weird wines...

Grocery stores and big chain wine retailers may struggle with knowing the details of their inventory, but they can at least get you to the right...

  • I usually go for beer when eating spicy food because my mouth is on 🔥, but I was thinking if wine could with spicy food, for example, Thai curry or Sichuan. Have you tried wine with spicy food?

    • Spicy food is a “high risk, high reward” pairing. It’s challenging because spiciness in food can make a wine seem astringent and thin. In addition you have to match the meal’s flavor intensity. I recommend off-dry to medium-sweet white...

  • I've being thinking on proper ways to store wine and spirits. I have my wine bottles laid down inside one of the drawers of my fridge. I put a towel on top to cover them from the light and as a cushion to minize their movement. Long story short, should I get a wine cooler?

    • If you’re drinking your wine within a few weeks of buying it, you’re good to keep them on their side in a low cabinet or at the bottom of your closet. The fridge works for short term storage, but it can ruin corks from being too cold or dry after a...
