Review: Is 'Hamburgueria da Baixa' worth trying?
I try to review my new favourite burger
Those of you who follow me over on DriveTribe might remember May 2021 when I spotted this Ferrari 458 Italia, whose owner also owns a Lamborghini Gallardo superleggera and a Ferrari 488 spider. But anyways, let's talk about food now.
Why was that relevant, you ask? Because the owner opened an artisanal burger restaurant a few years ago, it then went on to get a good reputation, and today there are 15 "Hamburgueria da Baixa" restaurants spread around Portugal. "Hamburgueria da Baixa" literally translates to "Downtown Burger restaurant", and that's because the first restaurant was opened at my city's (Faro) Downtown, which is where I got my burger from. He has also opened 2 Mexican food restaurants, but I'm leaving that for a later date, and it's fair to say that I wouldn't have tried "Hamburgueria da Baixa" if I didn't find all that out.
I usually go to either McDonald's or Burger King when I feel like having a burger, or I make my own at home, but I've also tried many other burgers out before, including artisanal ones, and I felt I definitely had to add "Hamburgueria da Baixa" to my list, and so I did! (I paid for my own food).
There is a wide variety of burgers to choose from, so there is a high chance they have a burger you'd like to try, options include a vegetarian burger, a chicken burger, and even a "Sky Scraper" ("arranha-céus") that is made up of 3 burger patties and more ingredients, for those of you who want more than a simple burger, and the pricing is good in my opinion.
For this review I have chosen the "escangalhado", which is made up of a burger patty, lettuce, tomato, cheese, and bacon, while my dad who was with me went for the "garanhão", which is a "escangalhado" with a fried egg.
Was it good?
"Hamburgueria da Baixa" makes artisanal burgers, and it's cooked straight up after you order it, with fresh products (fresh meat, fresh potatoes, their own home-made bread, vegetables from their own garden, everything fresh, they don't even have a fridge).
The end result? Oh the result, the best burger I've had in my life! Full stop! I went ask for it at the restaurant as a takeaway so we could eat it on our van's bonnet/hood as sort of a "picnic" in a covid-friendly manner, and oh my did I have a good time enjoying that burger, it was so delicious! Next time I'll try it inside the restaurant though.
To start with the review, their bread was very good, soft, and tasty, the bacon was juicy, tender, very tasty, and those two worked very well together with the fresh lettuce and tomato, and the burger patty, of course. I love bacon on burgers, and that was very delicious. About the burger patty, that was very good too, thick, juicy, and tender, with plenty of delicious flavor, just like I like, making it a very good burger. Now it's time mention the chips/french fries, they were very good too, they were delicious, especially together with the homemade sauce that came with them.
Overall, it was the best burger I've had in my opinion, and far better than anything that Burger King or McDonald's has to offer, don't get me wrong, I like those, but this burger was a totally different experience, one that is made up of fresh ingredients, and that is very delicious, it just makes me hungry to think about it. Now I want to have one of their burgers again!
How can I try it?
There are currently 15 "Hamburgueria da Baixa" restaurants located around Portugal, so if you ever have the chance to come and visit Portugal, I totally recommend you to try out one of their burgers.
Also be sure to check them out on Facebook and Instagram, @hamburgueriadabaixa.
That was it, thank you for reading!
