Review: Limited edition Yorkie Orange

Has an orange chocolate bar ever actually tasted of orange?

Orange chocolate is everywhere. In fact, it's probably more abundant than unflavoured chocolate - and every type of chocolate inevitably ends up that way. Twirls, Galaxys and ice cream have all been subjected to the orange revolution, with Yorkie being the latest subject.

Victim would perhaps be a better word to describe Yorkie's situation, however. Until now, it had a history of being a titan of the chocolate world, literally crushing weaklings with its mighty power and weight (especially if it had spent a spell in a fridge). But the uninspiring orange flavour it has now been garnished with in "limited edition" form completely trashes its reputation.

Aside from Yorkies appearing to have suffered from that most common of chocolate diseases (shrinkage in size but not price), being tarnished with a bland orange taste has significantly reduced their social standing. It would be a fair argument to claim that no mainstream chocolate bar has ever produced a genuinely fruity orange flavour, but the synthetics of the orange Yorkie was bland and powerless, providing only a sugary gleam.

The rest of the Yorkie bar was characteristically chubby, emphasising its tough guy credentials. The giant chocolate chunks were faultless, being milky and totally filling for the mouth and stomach. If you've ever wondered what it must be like to eat a house, try a Yorkie.

Essentially, Nestle have greatly messed up Yorkie's image by dosing it with unnecessary sickly sweetness and the company would be wise to ensure the bar's run does not extend beyond its limited edition restriction.

As for the reliance of chocolate companies on uninspiring orange flavours, perhaps another fruit could blow profit margins into new realms - there are a fair few to choose from, after all. Instagram would go mad for an avocado chocolate bar.
