Snoop Dogg is on fire with his Merlot-inspired Cali Red wine

Gin & Juice & Wine & Booze?

Calvin 'Snoop Dogg' Broadus has been putting a whole lotta eggs in the booze basket and after releasing his own brand of wine earlier this year, he's now also selling his own brand of gin, a fruity and gluten-free product made in partnership with Trusted Spirits. Snoop being Snoop, the story behind the booze is just as interesting, if not more, than the drink itself.

While the idea behind Snoop's gin brand is a bit more conventional because the rapper partnered with Keenan Towns, former marketing guru at Diageo, the story behind Snoop's wine is exhilarating. Snoop said it was West Coast rapper Warren G who introduced him to the wine world.

In an interview with CNN, Snoop said fellow rapper Warren G "popped some sh*t on us called Merlot. It just sounded expensive, so we started drinking that and we fell in love with it because it made us feel some kind of way about ourselves. Wine started to enhance my thinking and my thought process," he also said that "Even the glass that you’re drinking it out of, the way that you hold the glass, your posture, your conversation – all of that comes with the feeling of drinking wine. As I got older, I wanted to age like fine wine. You are what you drink".

This gave him an idea for his own brand of wine, which is called Cali Red and is made in partnership with 19 Crimes, an Australian wine label. Snoop is 100 % involved in the blending process and he describes his wine as "strong and bold with a smoky taste" and he suggests pairing it with a filet mignon steak or fettuccine because, believe it or not, Snoop Dogg has also written a cookbook titled 'From Crook to Cook'.

Cali Red, priced at $12, is a blend of 65% Petite Syrah, 30% Zinfandel, and 5% Merlot from Lodi.

  • I had a glass at my coworker's house. It was immensely jammy, soft and round in texture, with some noticeable oak... Not bad, but not my cupa tea.
