the story is too embarrassing to tell, because it involves a totally conventional meal at a much derided chain restaurant. But between the company we were with and the execution of the dish, it sticks out as the best meal ever. Moral of the story: a simple item prepared expertly will always trump an exotic dish that was just thrown at you
McDonalds. I'd just finished walking a 7 day wilderness hike, having long run out of plum puddings and port, and had been feeding like a bird on nuts and wild roots. When I got to civilisation, I sat down on a real chair, at a real table, blinking, and had a DinnerBox.
My best dining experience..we were camping and I slow cooked a pork roast over a wood fire. We covered a tree stump in foil and used our pocket knives to cut off pieces to eat.
So many. A gourmet pub in North Yorkshire, a pizza in Mons, Belgium, grilled Mahi Mahi on the east coast of the UAE, cheese fondue in Montreal, a simple but amazing pasta on the Amalfi Coast. The top one has to be grilled hammour in Doha in the 80s.

I still remember the first golden fry.
Did you not get the kangaroo burger? Or koala nugget selection box? How about the spider dippers?
You need to remember I had slain kangaroos with my bare hands and roasted them over a fire that quickly became uncontrollable, for days.
It was time for chicken nuggets.

Emeril Lagasse’s restaurant in Vegas, many, many years ago :-)
