The Berry Company’s classic Cosmopolitan cocktail recipe
Channel your inner Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte or Miranda
As with most cocktails, the history of the Cosmopolitan is often disputed. There are early references with different ingredients back as far as 1934.
However, when we get to the 1970s and 1980s, that’s when things get a bit confusing. It was thought that Toby Cecchini of the Odeon in Manhattan came up with the drink in 1987, but there are other (very valid) claims from Neal Murray, Cheryl Cook, and Melissa Huffsmith (who worked with Toby Cecchini).
We may never know which one of them has the true claim to cocktail fame, but the Cosmopolitan also owes a lot to Sex and the City. It may never have reached icon status if it wasn’t for Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte and Miranda ordering countless Cosmos throughout the '90s and '00s.
So while the Cosmo may already seem a bit retro ('90s fashion is currently back in after all…), it’s the perfect go-to drink to bring in the weekend. A lovely balance of sharp and sweet, yet still packing a punch, it should be a drink every home bartender has in their arsenal.
Food blogger @janeyfoodlover has put together her own twist on the Cosmo, where she switches out the citrus vodka for normal vodka, and garnishes with orange.
- 1.5oz (50ml) vodka
- 0.5oz (15ml) triple sec/Cointreau
- 1oz (30ml) The Berry Company Cranberry Juice Blend
- 0.5oz (15ml) fresh lime juice
- Orange peel, for garnish
- Add all the ingredients to a cocktail shaker filled with ice.
- Shake well and strain into a cocktail glass.
- Garnish with orange peel.
