The best fried chicken I ever ate

I had to write a narrative on food for my college class, so I decided to write it about the best-fried chicken I ever ate

The time Nolan had the most scrumptious fried chicken ever!

Nolan was on a cruise with his three other family members, his mom, his dad, and his sister. Nolan was on the Carnival Valor, which was a five-day cruise to the beautiful, warm, clear waters of the Bahamas. Nolan and his family were still exploring the massive ship still trying to get acquainted with its confusing deck plans.

Nolan and his family were walking past rows and rows of clear windows that lead to a portal of miles and miles of flat blue water that was reflecting the soft yellow and orange sunset with a few fluffy grey clouds in the distance.

As the family of four was walking to the dining room wearing dresses or button-down shirts with a hint of recently sprayed cologne, they had to pass the loudest part of the ship, the casino! The casino might seem great at first, but it is just a hangout of the wrinkly, smelly, smokers. That’s right they smoke right in the middle of the ship! Among all the bright yellow and white flashing lights, catchy jingles, and bells that are loud as hell of the instant debt makers, all that the family could smell is the thick cigarette smoke. The further the family of four walked in the casino, the hazier and smokier it got to the point where they could just barely see ten feet in front of them among all the bright flashing lights.

Once Nolan and his family finally broke free of the haze, it was smooth sailing to the stern of the ship, aka the dining room.

Not long after, the family reached the ever-growing line of hungry sunburnt red vacationers.

Nolan thought to himself, “This is going to take forever for the hosts to check our blue and white driver's licence size I.D. cards.”

Surprisingly it only took five minutes of anxious waiting to get into the dining room. The family had applied the bubbly, alcohol smelling hand sanitizer before reaching their table.

Once they reached their, table they were greeted by a napkin. Not just any napkin, soft silk-like snow-white napkin folded like a cute little mouse. It was a delightful sight to see after walking through hell.

Once seated in the plush cushioned chairs that felt like clouds, the family was able to read the white and black menu. While Nolan was reading the short menu, one thing stood out in particular to him, the fried chicken. Among all the soft dim yellow-white lights and the cascading orange sun through the wall of clear windows the words fried chicken seemed to glow brighter than everything else in the spacious dining room.

Shortly after finding the perfect meal, Nolan politely asked the overly kind waiter for the fried chicken. With a strong smile showing off his pearl-white teeth, the waiter politely replied, “Yes you may sir.”

Just a few minutes later the fired chicken arrived. It arrived on a big white plate that was covered by a barely translucent brown cover. Then the waiter took off the cover and placed the warm still steaming fried chicken in front of Nolan. He could smell the fresh oil that was still glistening in the light, the breading started to pop out in the smell of the chicken just like the oil. The golden-brown just so perfectly fried to a crisp skin seemed like it would melt in his mouth.

Once Nolan unwrapped his mouse napkin, he took out the mirror-like silver, cold to the touch silverware, and placed the soft snow-white napkin on his lap; he could finally dig into what would be the best fired chicken ever!

Once the knife tore through the delicate golden crispy skin, a stream of steam started to rise. While cutting through the chicken a stream of clear water-like juice started to leak from it.

Once Nolan got a bite-size piece of the chicken on his fork, he could finally eat the tender chicken. The instant the chicken hit his tongue it seemed to block out all the fellow soft orange tan vacationers whispering to each other. The way the warm chicken melted away in Nolan’s mouth was nothing like he had ever experienced before. The satisfying crunch of the golden skin, the harmony of the seasons, blended in the chicken. The warmth traveled from the chicken to the mouth and caused his eyes to open wide.

Nolan said with confidence, “This is the most amazing thing I have ever eaten!” Nolan took another bite of the scrumptious juicy melt-in-your-mouth chicken. The way the salt stood out in the savory seasoning took the chicken to a whole other level!

Once Nolan finished off the fried chicken, with each bite getting better and better, all the surroundings came back to him. He could once again hear the whispers of others around him, he could feel the soft vibration from the ship’s propellers, and most of all the gentle melody of Lionel Richie's song “Say You Say Me.” It was an experience Nolan would never forget and always dream it would happen once again one day in the future.

Do you love fried chicken as much as I do?

  • Promising writer but still needs a bit of polishing pal. Great descriptive qualities but unsure why you refer to yourself in the second person.
