This deli gives you free food for solving math problems
The challenge has gone viral on TikTok
You can rely on your local deli for a quick last-minute lunch or for a midnight snack after a few beers.
But a deli in New York is giving customers a bit more than they bargained for.
Ahmed Alwan, who works as a cashier at a store called Lucky Candy in the Bronx, has decided to run a pretty special deal (*run* being the operative word there).
The 20-year-old college student is offering customers a deal: if you can solve a math equation, then you get five seconds to grab anything you want in the store — and take it home for free.
Alwan told CNN: "All I wanted to do was to help people. But I wanted to make it fun. So I made a TikTok and chose a challenge, asking them a math question. It's a way to entertain and educate people in need while putting a smile on their face, too."
The challenge, unsurprisingly, has since gone viral. Alwan has gained over 420,00 followers on TikTok.
In the videos you can hear Alwan shouting out equations like: “8*7+3-1” and “If you have 10 apples and take away 4 oranges how many apples does that leave you with?”
Customers then frantically take five seconds to grab what they want.
There’s one thing in the store you can’t have though... and that’s his Alwan’s cat. (According to CNN, someone tried it.)
Alwan said his main concern was helping low-income community members save for higher priority expenses, such as rent and utilities.
Saleh Aobad, the store's owner and Alwan's father, said he's "very proud" of his son.
"It's great to see him do good and help out the community, and most importantly represent Islam," Aobad told CNN. "It's impacting the business in a positive way, bringing awareness and attention to the store as well as spreading positivity throughout the community."
