This restaurant claims its burger has induced labour in 31 different women
The 'Labor Inducer' is on the menu of The Suburban in Excelsior, Minnesota
There are all sorts of odd things and odd methods out there that claim to be able to induce labour in pregnancy. This has to definitely be the weirdest one that I've come across though! A restaurant in the US has a burger on its menu that, according to the owners, has induced labour in 31 different women within a day of eating it!
The 'Labor Inducer' as it's known is on the menu of The Suburban in Excelsior, Minnesota and it's a very hefty burger indeed! It features beef, caramelised onions, spicy Cajun remoulade, mustard and honey-cured bacon and is wrapped up in a pretzel bun. It came to be as the result of the restaurant testing out some new burger recipes to enter the Twin Cities Burger Battle back in 2019, when the then-pregnant Kelsey Berset (co-owner of the restaurant alongside her mother and sister) decided to indulge in this very weird burger. "While we were taste-testing the burgers in slider form, I loved the burger so much that I asked our chef to make me (another) full-sized one," she told Today at the time. "I figured I was 38 weeks pregnant, so why not indulge? About six hours later, my contractions started." Thus, the new burger earned its name of the 'Labor Inducer'.
As the word spread about this burger with miraculous labour-inducing powers, more and more pregnant women came along to see if ingesting this strange creation would do the trick. It turns out that it did work for some other women! 31 different women (including Kelsey herself) have now gone into labour after eating the burger. "It has been such a whirlwind," said co-owner and mother of Kelsey Cindy Berset to Fox 9. "Every time a mom walks through that door, I know what she is coming in for and it’s the ‘Labor Inducer.’"
Is there any scientific proof of the burger actually being able to induce labour at all? Sadly, there isn't. Whilst tales and whisperings persist that eating spicy foods (there is quite a lot of spice in this burger!) can help induce labour, there is no actual hard and fast link between ingesting any kind of food and a baby popping out within the next 24 hours. Maybe it's just one of those mysteries of the human body that we haven't quite figured out yet...
