This year's birthday burger night review: Grub Kitchen & Bar, Atlanta
After my first and second choices got shot down by circumstance, choice three produced a win!
It's been a bit of a tradition that my wife Stacey takes me out for a ridiculously good cheeseburger for my birthday. While I hate birthdays, I love getting presents and my birthday burger every year! This year's Birthday burger Night proved to be a bit of a rollercoaster as it pertained to actually selecting where my cheeseburger was going to be coming from!
This burger used to be all but impossible to get your hands on – let me tell you the story. And dare I say it, it's the best burger I've eve
This year I had decided that I really wanted one of the best, and I mean THE BEST, burgers in the United States to start my 41st year with. My choice was Holeman & Finch Public House in Atlanta, GA. I just wrote about that burger here, and I was really, really looking forward to eating another one of these thoughtfully and perfectly crafted cheeseburgers. But, Holeman & Finch Public House is closed while they move! And the other locations proved to be impractical for a weeknight dinner with how horrible Atlanta area traffic is.
The Holeman & Finch Burger. Possibly one of the best in the world?
My second choice was a lesser know area joint called Lucky's Burgers & Brews. Lucky's is oddly dog-themed, with most of the food on the menu named after dogs. I've only eaten there one time, but I loved it! That one trip saw me ordering a cheese burger named after my college football teams 2nd biggest rival; The Georgia Dawg Pounder.
This burger features a 7 oz. burger patty, a fried ball of pimento cheese, red pepper jelly, and mayonnaise. It was VERY good! In the handful of days leading up to my birthday, I studied the menu carefully, narrowing down my burger choice for my birthday, and finally settled on The Señor Chow-Chow burger; featuring a burger patty made with a blend of Angus beef and chorizo sausage topped with grilled poblano peppers and onion, Pepper Jack cheese, Mexican street corn, chili-lime crema, and Cotija cheese.
Stacey called up to the closest and most convenient Lucky's Burgers & Brews to make sure their dining room was going to be open in these COVID times, and learned they were going to be closed on my birthday for renovations! My damn bad luck struck again! I was crushed.
Lucky's Burgers & Brews The Señor Chow-Chow burger!
Scrambling for an emergency Birthday Burger Night location, Stacey and I both hit Google searches on our laptops, and Stacey found Grub Kitchen & Bar located a reasonable distance away. I studied the menu and found two choices I was interested in, and our Birthday Burger Night plans were locked in.
Grub Kitchen & Bar
Grub Kitchen & Bar.
Grub Kitchen & Bar is a stylish place with counter service style ordering. The menu mainly features burgers, but they have a few other offerings to help keep folks happy. Another plus is they have beer, cocktails, and adult boozy milkshakes on the menu! As for my burger choices, I had it narrowed down to two; the Mac 'N' Cheese Burger or the Cadillac Wagyu burger. Being it was my birthday, I chose to ride in style! The Cadillac Wagyu was for me! I also ordered their cheese fries while Stacey went with the Front Porch burger (plain burger with lettuce and tomato) and a side of Brussels sprouts. Oh. And I ordered the biggest Pabst Blue Ribbon beer on the menu!
This was a big burger meal!
The Cadillac Wagyu burger was AWESOME. It featured a thick Wagyu blend patty cooked medium rare and was topped with roasted garlic A1 aioli, tomato, spinach, Swiss and French fried onions, all on a toasted bun. The patty was very flavorful with a strong beefiness to it. It was VERY juicy! The toppings went well with the richness of the Wagyu beef blend with just the right amount of garlic flavor peeking its head out. The fried onion bits along with the toasted bun provided a nice little crunchiness to the texture. I pretty much ate this in one go without stopping to put it down because it was so juicy and messy, any other way of consuming it would have been a messy disaster!
The Cadillac Wagyu burger!
The cheese fries were next level good! I couldn't believe how next level good they were! The French fries themselves were very crunchy and fried in a really good oil because they had a great flavor to them. But then you take into consideration they were topped with Monterey Jack and cheddar cheese, bacon, jalapeños, and jalapeño ranch. Ohhhhh my! The cheese fries had a subtle smokiness to them from the bacon and the roasted jalapeños. The jalapeños ranch sauce that came on the side packed a flavor punch that added to the next level awesomeness this side item brought to our table.
Next level cheese fries!
The meal was so filling that I just couldn't order the next thing I wanted; the Boozy Mint Chocolate Chip Milkshake. Ughhhhh. I was just crushed under the weight of that Cadillac Wagyu burger! Stacey did a good job finding this place and I was very happy with my Birthday Night Burger. I can't wait to see where I end up for a birthday burger next year, but one thing is for sure; I need to get back to Grub Kitchen & Bar to try the Mac 'N' Cheese burger and a Boozy Mint Chocolate Chip Milkshake!
Thank you for a special birthday night Stacey!
